2025年前期、地域観光デザイン学科2年生のWEBライティング授業の一環として、学生同士によるインタビュー記事制作を行いました。この記事は、その授業内で実施された内容をまとめたもので、今回はイーコーコーさん（ミャンマー出身）がガラさん（スリランカ出身）に行ったインタビュー内容をご紹介します。

南阿蘇で見つけた、わたしらしい学びのカタチ

初めに

南阿蘇村にあるイデアITカレッジ阿蘇（IICA）地域観光デザイン学科で学ぶ一人の留学生が、自身の学びと成長について語ってくれた。彼の話からは、「学ぶ」という行為が知識を超え、地域・人・自分自身との出会いによってどれだけ豊かに広がっていくのかを感じ取ることができる。

1. 南阿蘇で始まった新しい暮らし

彼はもともと母国でも都会で育ち、日本に来てからも福岡の日本語学校で学んでいた。そんな彼にとって、南阿蘇という自然豊かな場所での暮らしはまったく未知の世界だった。

「最初は、地域のことも日本の文化もよく分からなかったです。コンビニが遠いし、バスも少ないし、不安だらけでした」

それでも、少しずつ南阿蘇の人々と触れ合い、風景に慣れ、生活を自分のものとして受け入れていった。交通の不便さに対応するため、IICA1年目で運転免許を取得し、車で通学するようになったのもその一歩だ。

2. IICAでの学びと、自信の成長

IICAに入学する前、日本語能力試験には3度挑戦しても合格できなかったという。しかし、入学後は先生のサポートや仲間との勉強を通じて1年以内に合格。彼はこの経験を「自信がついた」と話す。

「IICAに入ってから、自分のペースで学び、考え、成長できたと思います。プレゼンやグループワークも楽しくなってきました」

彼が特に好きな授業は「地域づくり」。地域を歩き、自分の目で課題を探すフィールドワークに強い魅力を感じている。

「もともと温泉が大好きなので、温泉組合の活動を調べたり、地域の温泉の魅力を探ったりするのがすごく面白かったです」

イベントの手伝いでは、子どもからお年寄りまで、たくさんの人と話す中で地域の一員になれた気がしたという。

「来たばかりの頃は、パソコンはゲームに使うだけで、WordやExcelなんてまったく分かりませんでした」そう語る彼だが、今ではMicrosoft Officeを使いこなし、SNSやWebライティングの授業も楽しんでいる。新しい技術を学ぶ楽しさに目覚めたのも、IICAでの体験のひとつだ。

3. 夢に向かって——地域とともに歩む未来

日本人の学生とともに授業を受け、飲食店やパン屋でのバイトを通して、日本語だけでなくコミュニケーション力もぐんと伸びたという。

「南阿蘇の人たちは本当に優しくて、本気で仲良くなれる親友ができました。山登りにも何度も一緒に行きました」

山の多い南阿蘇は、アウトドア好きな彼にとって最高の環境。豊かな自然が、心の余裕と癒しを与えてくれた。

彼の将来の目標は、観光企業やホテル企業に就職し、母国と日本の架け橋になること。地域の魅力を知る力、伝える力を活かして、多くの人に感動を届けたいという。

一方で、パン作りにも強い関心を持っており、パン屋での経験を生かして「いつか自分のパンを作ってみたい」という夢も持っている。

「自分のことは自分で決める。旅行が好きな自分が、自分らしく生きていける道を歩みたい」

IICAでの学びは、教科書だけでは得られない“生きた経験”に満ちていた。地域に根ざし、人と関わり、未知の挑戦に立ち向かいながら得たものは、きっと彼の人生の土台となっていくだろう。

As part of the Web Writing class for second-year students in Tourism Design Department during the first semester of 2025, the students interviewed each other and created articles. Introduction

In this article, a student from the Tourism Design Department at Idea IT College Aso (IICA), located in Minami-Aso Village, shares his experiences of learning and growing in Japan. His story shows how learning is not only about knowledge, but also about meeting new people, joining a community, and discovering yourself.

1. A New Life Starting in Minami-Aso

He grew up in a big city in his home country, and after coming to Japan, he studied at a Japanese language school in Fukuoka. For him, life in Minami-Aso — a place full of nature — was something completely new.

“At first, I didn’t understand the local community or Japanese culture well. The convenience store was far, buses were few, and I felt very nervous.”

Even so, he slowly got used to the people, the scenery, and the lifestyle in Minami-Aso. To deal with the lack of public transportation, he got his driver’s license during his first year at IICA and started commuting by car — a big step forward in adapting to life here.

2. Learning at IICA and Gaining Confidence

Before entering IICA, he tried the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) three times but could not pass.

However, after entering IICA, he studied with support from his teachers and classmates and passed the JLPT within one year. He says this experience gave him a lot of confidence.

“After entering IICA, I feel that I have been able to learn, think, and grow at my own pace. I also started to enjoy presentations and group work.”

His favorite class is Community Development. He enjoys the fieldwork where students walk around the area to find local issues with their own eyes.

“I love hot springs, so it was fun to research hot spring associations and explore the charm of local hot springs.”

By helping at local events, he talked with many people — from children to elderly residents — and felt like he became a real member of the community.

“When I first came to IICA, I only used a computer for games. I didn’t know anything about Word or Excel.”

Now, he can use Microsoft Office well and enjoys classes such as SNS marketing and Web Writing. Learning new skills has become one of the fun parts of his life at IICA.

3. Walking Toward My Future Together with the Community

He studied side by side with Japanese students, and through part-time jobs at a restaurant and a bakery, his communication skills improved a lot.

“The people in Minami-Aso are really kind, and I was able to make true friends I can be very close with. We went mountain climbing together many times.”

Minami-Aso, with its many mountains, is the perfect environment for someone who loves the outdoors like him. The rich nature gave him peace of mind and helped him relax.

His future goal is to work for a tourism company or a hotel company and become a bridge between his home country and Japan. He hopes to use his ability to discover and share the unique charms of local areas to inspire and move many people

He also loves baking and has a dream to make his own bread someday, using what he learned from working at a bakery.

“I want to make my own choices. I love traveling, and I want to find a way of living that feels true to myself.”

Learning at IICA gave him many experiences that cannot be found in textbooks — connecting with the community, meeting new people, and facing new challenges. These experiences will surely become the foundation of his life.
